10/9/99 Varicoasters w/? @ Fox n Firkin
Now, since this show was at a small bar and I had no chance of sneaking in without everyone inside knowing that I didn't belong there, my friend Sky and I had to settle with dancing outside. Luckily, there was a big window that let us see most of the bands.
The opening band, who's name sounded like something from Star Wars, was a great instrumental ska band from Eugene. If anyone knows of their name and wants to give it to me in print, I'd really appreciate it.
The Varicoasters put on one of the best, nay THE best show I've heard from them. Don't know what it was, but they were tight tight that night! They're getting a real smooth flow to their sound and I'm really diggin it.
Inside thirty 23-year-olds sat placcidly in their chairs, their faces stuck in perpetual smirks of cool unaffectedness, expelling energy only to keep their cheap beer from dripping back out of their sticky mouths. Meanwhile, on the other side of the glass, Sky and I were skanking and pogoing around in circles in the October night. Jake was kind enough to mention us (couldn't exactly hear what he said... something about the 'kids on the sidewalk') and got some cheers; the band turned around and waved.
Unfortunately, my ride came early and I had to leave before the set was over. Even with only hearing half a show and having a sheet of glass seperating me from the sound, I'm already recommending you pick up the Varicoasters' new album when it comes out in January. For now, let's hope for an all-ages show in Corvallis!!
