Varicoasters!!

The Varicoasters have broken up.

Here's an article from a few weeks ago.... kinda ironic title considering the band's recent demise, isn't it? The Varicoasters climbing the ladder

And also read a review of a recent show I attended. Varicoasters @ the Fox n Firkin

and another show as the openers for the Skatalites

Hey there beautiful, thanks for checkin out this Varicoasters page. In itself, to say that the Varicoasters are a ska band from Eugene, OR is not that impressive. So I'll list some imposing adjectives in hopes that it will make the reader of this site want to go out and buy the Varicoasters album, She Loves Me Not, which was released a long time ago. ('long time' being at least two years) OK, maybe the adjectives thing won't work...

The Varicoasters are a ska band that even people who generally dislike ska will enjoy. Whether it's their stage presence, the tightness of the horn section, or Jake's tattoos, Varicoasters shows at the WOW Hall are always well attended. The lyrics, written by frontman Jake Powell, go against the standard "I love ska/I love beer/hey rudegirl come over here! pick-it-up pick-it-up (repeat)" format.

With the glance of her eyes through the distant crowd
Smell the filth if you wish, if it makes you proud
Don't cave in to the sounds of her bullish pout
A wicked touch of a shameful lush, it makes me scream and shout

-- "Wicked Touch"

Recently, they've been adding some soul to their sound. Yeah, soul music. Like Stevie Wonder. Whatever it is, they've been sounding great lately. Each time I see 'em they sound better. Tighter, smoother, and more confident.

They're just a damn good band, regardless of what your opinion of ska. Give 'em a chance, support local artists and go see the Varicoasters!!!
